They are several million individuals, scattered over the territories of central-eastern India. Unlike Warli art, the Gonds had no pictorial tradition, with the exception of rudimentary clay art. Their women adorned the walls of houses before painting them in different natural clay colors. Jangarth Singh Shyam started painting murals at a very young age. His talent was recognized by an famous cultural actor of the second half of the 19th century, Jagdish Swaminathan. The latter took him under his wing and helped him develop his artistic gifts. The creativity of his designs quickly made him famous, he was called in the whole world. He died young, at 38, but Jangarth Singh Shyam was already the initiator of a new artistic movement. Many other painters in his family or community consider him a master.
