Rajesh Laxman Mor was born in 1982 in the district of Thane in the state of Maharashtra. He belongs to the Warli tribe. He is married and the father of two children. He divides his time between farming and painting. His favorite subject: trees. He draws all kinds of these, even inventing a few! These trees are of great poetry, finesse and complexity. Rajesh More has an identity of his own, and he continues to enrich it. Through these works he explores new themes such as climate change, the place of women in society etc. Rajesh More has exhibited in galleries in Japan as well as in France.
Warlis art
The Warlis are one of these many tribes (over 200 in India) with a population of around 600,000 living between states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The paintings of the Warlis were originally a ritual and ephemeral act performed on the floors, exterior walls and interior of houses built of red earth and bamboo. They are performed on the occasion ofcelebrations. From the 1970s, following a desire to protect this disappearing artistic heritage, the Indian government distributed new media for painting. This has enabled art to descend from the wall to the portable roller paper, from ritual art to contemporary art and from collective tradition to individual expression. These paintings have quickly gained access to museums as well as art galleries.
